I had a day off!

My last vacation from work was on the 22nd of April. That was incidentally also the day I took a flight from Chennai, India to Vancouver. Well, its happened again. I took a day off work. And I had no choice. It was either take the day off or lose it. You see, we have a certain number of days off work and if we don't use all but 5 of them (which I am moving to next year), we lose them. So... I took Friday off. Made a long weekend of it. It was quite nice.

I accomplished a lot on my day off. I got a bunch of things that I haven't had time to do for ever done. I was on the phone for an hour for work. I went to work. Well, I took chocolates to my work place and to my former work-place. I got hugged by a bunch of people there... and so forth. Godiva seems to make people do that. I went to the gym, I even went bowling after that. I went to the newly renovated BC Liquor Store on 39th and Cambie (and may I say it was impressive), I even dared to go into the mall... Oakridge was too close to give it a miss. I am glad to say I got out of there and out of there quickly, alive and in one piece. They have the only Benetton store I have seen in North America. And it only seemed to have stuff for women. I remember the Benetton store in Chennai. They had stuff for men.

I take 2 more days off work this year. Christmas eve eve. And New Years eve eve. But I work on Christmas and Boxing Day. Fun times ahead.

Strange is one way to put it

Life has been a bit strange of late. I've gone from being incredibly happy to depressingly sad. I don't quite have the answers to why that is and I am not really sure I care to find out. I almost feel like its easier to give up than try and work towards some worthwhile conclusion to the problem. I love going on vacation. I hate coming back from there. Generally, when I get back from vacation, I go through a period of adjustment that starts with the lack of sleep (because I am usually not in the same time zone as my vacation destination was), self-pity and loathing at the state I left my place in, in my hurry to get out of here. It progresses to outright hatred of having to go back to work and dealing with the routine in general. I resolve to find better things to do in life, learn more, improve myself, lose weight etc etc. And eventually, I end up no further than where I was, where I've been for over 2 years. I can find any number of reasons and excuses to make this someone...

How to make a good thing go bad quickly in tech

I haven't written a work related post in what seems like ages. I am currently living through the aftermath of a third M&A in my career. The company I currently work for is in its third incarnation - from a small tech startup 15 or so years ago to something that was sold to a large software company - one of those lumbering giants that have their hands in all kinds of technology driven fields - where they invested sufficiently in it to grow it in its current location - to now finally being acquired by an even larger technology company - one that its hands in all kinds of technology fields.I came along post the second phase but I have seen 2 other US tech company acquisitions, one that made me quit fast and the other that took me around the world but made me leave anyway. The difference from the previous take-over of the current place and this one is stark. While there was a lot of churn up top in the previous acquisition and differences in what you paid for benefits etc, for...

Finding happiness

I have been put up to a new task. I am allegedly supposed to find out what makes me happy and start doing it. Those are orders from the boss. Apparently my happiness or more appropriately, the lack of it has an affect on everyone else. I never knew that. There is one slight problem with this. The trouble with finding happiness is two-fold; on the one hand, you have a very hard time describing what happiness is, what makes you happy; on the other, you are afraid that you might actually find it. Then what? Well, be happy right? Really? We are human. I get bored of things quickly. But I think I will give it a shot. So, I embark on my given task. I wonder if I keep saying I am happy if I will buy into it. Likely not. How do I figure out what makes me happy? I don't know. Alcohol? Not really. I collect, but I don't consume. Finish work on time? Well, that could work, but then I would have to figure out what to do once I leave. Sleep? Can sleep make you happy? Money? I think money ma...
