6 months coming up

Its almost 6 months since I left home! That scares me. I still have boxes that I shipped from home staring at me in my living room. Lazy. I have been through fall, winter, spring and what is hopefully summer in DC already. I'd hate to have it get any warmer here.

I've been working pretty much the whole time. I did take a week off in March to go home and visit the family and the new dog. Other than that, I have not done much else. Like going to go see all the monuments, museums etc that dot the landscape in the District.

I have learned a few things in the last 6 months:

  • IT is expensive to live in the district - despite all the things the folks from here said before I moved here. Eating out is scandalously expensive. You get twice as much... but it costs a LOT. Rent is scary expensive. I spend almost twice what I do in Vancouver. Except, I had a three bedroom house there. I don't have that here.
  • Getting pants hemmed costs an arm and then some... 2 pants = a cool 36 dollars.
  • It gets warm here. Really. WARM.
  • They have glow in the dark chicken. Go to Safeway or any other grocery shop and look at the chicken and check out the orange tinged chicken.
  • The waterfront area of Georgetown is quite nice. I like it.
  • I am poorer than I was in Canada. It sucks.
  • Taxes suck. I have to pay the Canadian AND US governments tonnes of cash.
  • Poverty in the capital of the US is sad. Very sad. I have lived in many places with a lot of poor people... but have yet to see such desperation, destitution and hopelessness as I have here.
  • Immigrants don't seem to live in the District. I live here. Most immigrants live in other states.
  • The media is a bit scary here. People seem to live on the rush that fear gives them.
  • There is little if any recycling here. My home has no recycling facility. You do not get (nor pay) a deposit back for returning bottles.
  • My office sucks. Really. The Vancouver office was light years better. It was not as hot, had good coffee, cheap food with way more variety... and way prettier women around the office (it is on a University campus for god's sake)
  • I have never seen so many soldiers in one place.
  • There are such things as Iraqi Vets. From 2 wars. It is sad that so many people have had their world changed because of decisions made by people in the government... for decisions that most likely don't understand.

I have also not blogged as often as I would like... I have also been lazier than lazy. But maybe it will change...

The shopping bug strikes again

I've been on a binge of late. I have been shopping for all sorts of stuff. I started with an apartment. Couldn't afford it. Moved on to smaller things. I bought a pair of black Diesel Remy shoes. Probably the softest shoes I have ever had. They are SUPER comfortable too. I got a pair of Merrell Mesa Vent II shoes for doing the grind. Very comfortable. Of course... my time didn't improve by that much. I got a Puma Beluga Football jacket. Its colour is officially Pompeian Red-Moon Rock Gray. Looks cool. I got a pair of quicksilver Slang shorts. They are awesome! I also ended up getting Jeans at Mark James (they have a summer sale on now). I got a pair of Diesel Clerby jeans (these are extremely soft) and a pair of 7 for all mankind relaxed jeans. They're both getting altered (hopefully, with the original hem in-tact). How much has all this cost? I would estimate it at over $500. Ouch. And hooray for our dollar being so much closer to being on par to the US one.
