Remember freedom fries?

I can't believe that it has been over 5 years since Robin Cook passed away. He was one of the few principled politicians out there that I have known of and dare I say, admired. Listening to his resignation speech (from the cabinet), I have a profound sense of sadness for Britain and for the larger civilised world. It is sadder still when you go back in time and think of people like Hans Blix, much maligned by the then US administration and by many others in the world.

History will be astonished at the diplomatic miscalculations that led so quickly to the disintegration of that powerful coalition.

says Cook of the split between the allies in regards to this war.

The world is worse off today without people like Robin Cook. I sure hope the folks that went to war and decided to rename food are enjoying their freedom fries secure in the knowledge that at least now, those (phantom) weapons of mass destruction are indeed beyond use; safely put away in the figment of their collectively (tiny) imaginations.

Rest in peace Robin Cook. The price you paid was small. The price the rest of these sods are paying is still being counted... in lives and dollars; the numbers of digits that make them up, boggles the mind.

Comments

sigh.. people like him who tried to stand up against the idiocy that was going on were hunted down during that time, their reputations destroyed...

as you said, in hindsight, they got off easy. The rest of the world is left to suffer the after effects of the wrong decisions.

Being Happy

I wonder why there is so much unhappiness in the world sometimes. I'm currently reading R. K. Narayan's Waiting for the Mahatma. The world the protagonist in the book lives in is a rather harsh one. And he seems to be quite unhappy. What makes one unhappy? Some days, I ask myself what the heck I am doing here. Maybe its because I have worked for the same person for 4 years and the same company for over 6. This was supposed to be a short-term job that would bring bigger and better things. I don't know what it has brought. I mean, I am doing better things. I am doing bigger things. But I don't know if it makes me happy any more. I don't wake up with the anticipation of hurrying to work to learn something new and make the world a better place. I don't know why. I suppose I have the ability to do that to a certain extent. Is it the lack of ambition?  Reading back to some of the earliest posts on this blog, I gave myself the task of being happy. Like it is somethi...

The shopping bug strikes again

I've been on a binge of late. I have been shopping for all sorts of stuff. I started with an apartment. Couldn't afford it. Moved on to smaller things. I bought a pair of black Diesel Remy shoes. Probably the softest shoes I have ever had. They are SUPER comfortable too. I got a pair of Merrell Mesa Vent II shoes for doing the grind. Very comfortable. Of course... my time didn't improve by that much. I got a Puma Beluga Football jacket. Its colour is officially Pompeian Red-Moon Rock Gray. Looks cool. I got a pair of quicksilver Slang shorts. They are awesome! I also ended up getting Jeans at Mark James (they have a summer sale on now). I got a pair of Diesel Clerby jeans (these are extremely soft) and a pair of 7 for all mankind relaxed jeans. They're both getting altered (hopefully, with the original hem in-tact). How much has all this cost? I would estimate it at over $500. Ouch. And hooray for our dollar being so much closer to being on par to the US one.

Strange is one way to put it

Life has been a bit strange of late. I've gone from being incredibly happy to depressingly sad. I don't quite have the answers to why that is and I am not really sure I care to find out. I almost feel like its easier to give up than try and work towards some worthwhile conclusion to the problem. I love going on vacation. I hate coming back from there. Generally, when I get back from vacation, I go through a period of adjustment that starts with the lack of sleep (because I am usually not in the same time zone as my vacation destination was), self-pity and loathing at the state I left my place in, in my hurry to get out of here. It progresses to outright hatred of having to go back to work and dealing with the routine in general. I resolve to find better things to do in life, learn more, improve myself, lose weight etc etc. And eventually, I end up no further than where I was, where I've been for over 2 years. I can find any number of reasons and excuses to make this someone...
